Traditional democratic methods of achieving change have failed to create the climate action required. We have lost 1.5°C and are less than a decade away from 2°C of warming. We must face the fact that if traditional democratic methods were going to work they would have done so by now. They haven't, and they won't. We must do something more effective.

Civil resistance has won many of the rights Canadians and others around the world enjoy. By disrupting business as usual civil resistance forces the public, media, and politicians to pay attention to an issue they would rather not. The political cost of inaction is raised by ongoing disruption until eventually the political cost becomes so high that it can no longer be justified and politicians are forced to act and do the right thing. Typically civil resistance asks a lot of its participants. This makes it hard to mobilize enough people to sustain the disruption. We know, we have tried.

We have a better way! One that brings together the low barrier to participation of a traditional protest march with the disruptiveness of civil resistance.

In the Lower Mainland we have a LNG export facility under construction at Woodfibre on Howe Sound, near Squamish. It is a beautiful location known internationally for its outdoor recreation opportunities from sail boarding and kite surfing to rock climbing, hiking, and much more. Just up the road is a world class ski destination that has been through another lackluster season of poor snow.

Our plan is to bring together the beauty of Howe Sound, the outdoor recreation that the area is renowned for, and traditional protest marches in a way that maximizes their disruptiveness and use the resulting media reach to tell the story of a very special place where the things people love about it are being destroyed by the LNG industry. We will tell the stories of the people involved, why they are taking action and for whom. We invite you to join us and if you don't live nearby please sign-up anyway, we have plans to involve you too!
